Celebration

From the Economist:

AT A time when the world is short of causes for celebration, here is a candidate: within the next few months women will cross the 50% threshold and become the majority of the American workforce. Women already make up the majority of university graduates in the OECD countries and the majority of professional workers in several rich countries, including the United States.…

Why is that a cause for celebration?

It reminds me of schooling. In the early 1970s, boys outperformed girls in schools, and this was a problem, a failing of the educational system. So more continuous assessment was brought in, the system was deliberately orientated towards girls, and in time girls came to outperform boys. This, though, was the fault of the boys, not the system. So more and more boys said “Sod it” and stopped trying.

If inequality is wrong, and inequality of opportunity is wrong, then it’s wrong regardless of the direction of the inequality, and this is true in schools, universities and in the workplace.

What’s more, this really shouldn’t need to be said.
